Industrial Relations, on the other hand, traditionally emphasizes collective labor dynamics, including the role of trade unions, collective bargaining, strikes, dispute resolution, and labor market regulation. It investigates how groups of workers negotiate power and influence conditions of employment, wages, and workplace policies. The purpose of ER and IR theories is to explain how work relationships are constructed, managed, and transformed over time, and how issues of conflict, cooperation, power, and justice are negotiated. These theories examine legal protections for workers, governance models, labor market institutions, and mechanisms for employee voice, as well as the role of the state in regulating employment practices. For example, ER theory might explore how performance management systems and reward strategies influence individual motivation and organizational commitment, while IR theory would focus on how union negotiations affect wage structures, working hours, and collective agreements. Together, these theories provide a comprehensive understanding of the forces that shape employment, balancing organizational objectives, employee rights, and societal norms, and offering frameworks to manage both individual and collective workplace relationships effectively.
